Construction on the Hazel McCallion Light Rail Transit (LRT) project in Mississauga and Brampton will continue into 2027, according to Metrolinx. Despite some delays, progress has been made on this ambitious 18-kilometre light-rail line.
Metrolinx’s President and CEO, Michael Lindsay, shared updates during the completion of tunnelling on the Eglinton Crosstown West extension. He mentioned that significant milestones have been achieved, with 75% of track work completed, guideways nearly finished, and key facilities energized.
Trial movements of trains are set to begin soon, drawing from experiences on previous LRT projects to streamline system integration testing. The goal is to complete all civil infrastructure by next year, followed by rigorous testing similar to the Eglinton and Finch projects.
Ontario Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria acknowledged the challenges of transit construction but emphasized the ongoing progress and dedication of the project teams working diligently, even on weekends.
While an exact timeline for final testing and commissioning was not provided, it is anticipated to take several months based on similar projects, potentially pushing the project completion to late 2027 or beyond.
Trains are expected to start operating between Kennedy Road South and Hurontario Street soon, a critical juncture for the LRT service. The project, which began construction in 2020, faced setbacks due to the pandemic and infrastructure issues.
