Several wildfires in the region have been contained in recent days, leading to poor air quality but aiding in firefighting efforts. Cliff Chapman from the BC Wildfire Service mentioned how a thick layer of smoke is now covering Penticton due to the Bald Range fire in the Summerland region, which caused evacuations.
Chapman explained that the smoke settling in valleys is actually helping to suppress the fires by depriving them of clean oxygen, thus limiting their spread. However, he warned that a change in weather clearing the smoke could escalate the fire risk.
With approximately 100 fires burning in British Columbia, half of them are currently uncontrolled. Despite relatively calm winds, there has been significant fire growth, indicating the impact of dry and drought conditions in the southern part of the province.
