Toronto authorities are looking into yet another case involving lithium-ion batteries after a fire broke out in a downtown apartment, leaving three individuals injured.
The incident occurred early Wednesday morning at a Toronto Community Housing building on George Street, prompting a swift response from firefighters. It was discovered that a lithium-ion battery was linked to the fire, although its specific usage remains unknown.
According to Toronto Fire Division Commander Paul O’Brien, the blaze resulted in injuries to three individuals. While the severity of their injuries is yet to be confirmed, paramedics noted that one person sustained non-life-threatening wounds.
Responders successfully extinguished the fire, but the incident sheds light on the increasing concern surrounding fires related to lithium-ion batteries in the city. Toronto Fire has already dealt with 76 such incidents this year, resulting in two fatalities and 14 injuries.
In a separate incident last week, a fire erupted at a city-operated shelter in Etobicoke, where firefighters discovered charred lithium-ion batteries at the scene. Similarly, compromised e-bike batteries were identified as a factor in an apartment fire in St. James Town that injured four individuals, including two children.
