Bookstores Rally Against Quebec Government’s Cuts to School Book Budget
Literature enthusiasts are gearing up for a special event on August 12, known as “I’m Buying a Quebec Book!” day, encouraging locals to support their community authors by visiting bookstores.
However, amidst the anticipation for bustling bookstores reminiscent of the holiday season, the literary industry is voicing concerns over a recent decision by the Quebec government that could impact children’s access to educational books.
In a move that has sparked criticism, the CAQ government opted to scrap the $38 million budget designated for school book purchases within service centers. This allocation will now be amalgamated into a larger fund covering various activities like sports programs and field trips. This decision has drawn backlash from booksellers and former government officials who are denouncing the elimination of a dedicated budget for school books.
The Quebec Booksellers Association (ALQ) expressed apprehension, fearing that the shift could result in decreased book acquisitions as books compete with other school-related needs. They highlighted the importance of books in education, emphasizing that they are not a luxury but a crucial tool for academic success.
To shed light on these concerns, numerous independent bookstores are set to distribute bookmarks on August 12 as a reminder that books play a vital role in education.
Echoing the ALQ’s sentiments, eight former Quebec ministers, including those of Culture and Communications, and Education, penned an open letter underscoring the potential negative impacts on youth development due to the government’s decision.
The “I’m Buying a Quebec Book!” day, initiated by authors Amélie Dubé and Patrice Cazeault in 2014, aims to showcase the diversity of genres and authors from Quebec. The event serves as an opportunity for readers to explore and support local literature.
Beyond the literary event, bookstores are organizing author meet-and-greets and book signings throughout the province to celebrate the rich culture of Quebec literature.
