Approximately 150 construction sites in Quebec have been impacted by a strike led by government engineers, slowing down or halting progress, particularly in regional areas. The strike, initiated by 1,900 engineers from the professional association of government engineers of Quebec, has been ongoing since July 6. The engineers work across various ministries, including Transport, Environment, Municipal Affairs, and Cybersecurity, affecting critical infrastructure projects.
The strike’s toll is evident, with contractors and workers facing current and anticipated financial and job losses. Caroline Amireault, the executive director of the association of road and major work contractors of Quebec, expressed concerns about the disrupted 2026 season and the potential ramifications for the 2027 season due to the strike. Urging both the Quebec government and the APIGQ to resume negotiations for a swift resolution, Amireault emphasized the importance of ensuring the smooth progression of construction activities in the region.
