Authorities in Sechelt issue warning about scammers impersonating police and bank staff, leading to a local resident losing over $100,000 in a recent incident.
The victim was duped by fraudsters posing as police officers and bank employees who claimed to be conducting a fake investigation, Sechelt RCMP revealed. The initial contact was made by someone pretending to be calling from the Vancouver Police Department’s non-emergency line, utilizing caller ID spoofing technology to appear authentic.
Pretending to be Vancouver Police Chief Cst. Steve Rai, the scammer convinced the victim to assist in an alleged fraud investigation involving a Sunshine Coast financial institution. Subsequently, the victim received a call from a woman purporting to represent the bank, instructing them to transfer money to a designated account for supposed testing purposes.
In response, the victim transferred $70,000 and then an additional $38,000 before realizing they had been scammed.
Sechelt RCMP warned that several individuals have fallen prey to similar schemes and advised residents to exercise caution when receiving unsolicited calls asking for personal or financial details. They stressed that legitimate officers will never request the public’s help in criminal investigations through financial transactions or sharing sensitive information over the phone.
To safeguard against fraud, residents are advised to be wary of manipulated caller IDs and to hang up on suspicious calls, reaching out directly to their bank or local law enforcement using official contact numbers if needed. Additionally, it’s crucial never to comply with instructions given during unsolicited phone calls, including sending money or disclosing financial login details.
