A new project has been launched by Urgences-santé to increase the distribution of naloxone kits by paramedics and help reduce opioid overdoses.
The goal of the project is to allow Urgences-santé paramedics, who cover the territories of Montreal and Laval, to provide naloxone kits to people suspected of experiencing an opioid overdose outside of hospital settings.
Urgences-santé says each kit contains two doses of intranasal naloxone, an instruction sheet and information on overdose prevention.
About 20 kits have been distributed so far.
Montreal public health officials raised the alarm in July about fatal overdoses as the number of deaths has skyrocketed in Quebec in recent months.
The first phase of the project is expected to last until February 2027.
The project is a collaboration between Santé Québec, Sacré-Cœur-de-Montréal Hospital and Montreal Public Health.
