Police shoot and kill 1 person after North York car crash, SIU investigating

Ontario’s police watch dog is investigating after a Toronto police officer shot and killed a man on Saturday afternoon during an investigation in North York.

Toronto police say they were in the Wilson Avenue and King High Avenue area just before 1:30 p.m. for reports of a damaged vehicle driving erratically when the vehicle in question was involved in a crash.

Police say the driver of the vehicle attempted to flee the scene as police arrived.

“As a result of the interaction with the suspect, an officer discharged their firearm,” police said in a social media post. “Suspect has been pronounced deceased on scene.”

Investigators say none of the officers at the scene were injured.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says it has invoked its mandate.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police, among other officials, that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
