Two Air Canada workers have been taken into custody by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) for their alleged involvement in a drug trafficking operation at Montreal-Trudeau Airport.
The RCMP’s investigation revealed that the pair, employed in ground operations at Air Canada, are suspected of collaborating in a scheme to smuggle cocaine and cannabis by using their access to secure airport areas to move luggage.
In a recent operation on Wednesday morning, the RCMP conducted searches at two residences, a vehicle in the Greater Montreal region, and at the location in Dorval where the airline employees worked.
The RCMP launched the investigation in May following the interception of 62.5 kg of cocaine in backpacks from a flight originating in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Additionally, 56 kg of cannabis were seized during the probe.
The arrested workers will undergo questioning and be released as the investigation progresses, according to the RCMP. The RCMP has also indicated that further arrests and charges could be made pending analysis of the evidence collected.
