A Vancouver Woman Sentenced for Tax Evasion Scheme Involving Rental Property
A Vancouver woman, Thi Nhan Nguyen, also known as Lynn Nguyen, has been handed a nine-month conditional sentence for evading over $100,000 in income taxes by falsely claiming a property with a tenant as her main residence.
According to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), Nguyen pleaded guilty to tax evasion and was fined approximately $104,000, the same amount she dodged in taxes during the scheme. The case dates back to 2012 when Nguyen acquired ownership of the Vancouver property.
Allegedly, Nguyen orchestrated a lengthy plan to deceive authorities into believing the property was her primary abode, despite renting it out. Her tactics included using the address for official purposes and managing the mail related to the property.
In 2015, Nguyen relinquished her stake in the property without informing her tax advisor. Subsequently, during a 2017 audit, she reportedly supplied false information to maintain that the property was her primary residence.
