The British Columbia government revealed on Thursday that the annual cap for rent increases in 2027 has been set at 2.2%, slightly lower than the previous year’s 2.3%.
Christine Boyle, the Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs, emphasized that the cap remains linked to inflation, aiming to assist residents in finding affordable housing options. Boyle highlighted the government’s efforts in boosting housing supply, combatting illegal short-term rentals, and restricting foreign investment in the housing market, resulting in a 4.5% decrease in average rents across B.C.
In a significant policy shift announced in 2019, the province discontinued the former practice of allowing rent increases based on inflation plus an additional two per cent. Without this change, the allowable rent hikes would have reached 5.4% in 2023 and 5.6% in 2024.
This new rent increase limit will come into effect on January 1, 2027, giving landlords ample time to provide the mandatory three months’ notice to tenants before implementing any adjustments in the upcoming year. Notably, the province reiterated that rent hikes can only occur once annually and must not surpass the designated cap.
