Thousands of residents in British Columbia’s South Okanagan region were forced to evacuate earlier this month due to a massive wildfire. The good news is that the BC Wildfire Service now reports that the fire is under control and is expected to stay within its current area of about 252 square kilometres near Summerland.
This wildfire, which was previously classified as a major concern, is no longer considered a wildfire-of-note. Currently, only two such significant fires remain in the province, one near Boston Bar and the other near Clinton.
The devastation caused by the Summerland fire has been significant, with approximately 150 structures destroyed or damaged, leading to the evacuation of 20,000 people. Tragically, one woman lost her life while trying to escape the blaze.
Although smoke from a wildfire in Washington state is visible in the Osoyoos area, the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen assures residents that there is no immediate threat to Canadian communities.
The wildfire situation in British Columbia remains critical, with 210 active wildfires across the province. In the past 24 hours alone, around 40 new fires have ignited, while approximately 30 have been successfully contained.
Despite ongoing efforts by firefighting crews, about 95 fires are still burning out of control, with new fires sparked by lightning strikes over the weekend adding to the challenges faced by responders.
As the firefighting continues, residents are urged to stay informed and prepared for any potential developments in the wildfire situation.
