Police have announced that four individuals, including two adult men and two male youths, are facing a staggering total of over 200 charges following an extensive investigation into a crime ring involved in numerous commercial break-ins, vehicle thefts, and fraud-related activities in the Durham Region and Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
Dubbed as Project Magenta, this thorough probe was initiated after law enforcement officers uncovered a series of connections between smash-and-grab break-ins, vehicle thefts, attempted vehicle thefts, thefts from vehicles, license plate thefts, and fraud offenses. Operating between June and September 2026, the group reportedly carried out 36 incidents in Durham and Toronto, utilizing stolen vehicles to facilitate their criminal activities, often resorting to ramming them into storefronts to gain unauthorized entry.
The investigation was kickstarted with two smash-and-grab break-ins at trading card stores in Ajax where merchandise amounting to approximately $148,000 was stolen. Subsequently, the same group was linked to a break-and-enter at Oliver Jewellery in Pickering, where stolen vehicles were allegedly used to force entry.
Among the various businesses targeted were jewelry stores, cannabis dispensaries, trading card shops, and pawn shops, with the collective offenses tied to Project Magenta resulting in nearly $1 million in losses and damages to businesses, vehicle owners, and the community at large.
Investigators have made public video footage of several incidents, including commercial break-ins and an attempted carjacking, as part of their ongoing efforts.
Acting Deputy Chief Glenn Courneyea emphasized the significant impact of organized property crime on local communities, highlighting the financial harm it causes, the erosion of safety perceptions within the community, and its contribution to further criminal activity.
Following the execution of multiple search warrants across the GTA, four suspects were apprehended without issue, with property believed to be linked to several offenses being recovered. The individuals charged with the multitude of offenses include:
