Demolition work has officially kicked off at an old grocery store site on King George Boulevard and 104th Avenue in Surrey. The demolition marks the beginning of the transformation of the area into a vibrant entertainment district, complete with a proposed 10,000-seat arena.
Mayor Brenda Locke led the demolition efforts, symbolizing a significant step towards the project’s realization. As she donned a campaign hat in light of the upcoming municipal election, Locke expressed her excitement for the future arena, envisioning it as a hub for sports and music events that will cater to people of all ages.
“This arena will not only host thrilling sports games but also bring incredible concerts for the community to enjoy. Surrey is on the brink of some truly amazing developments,” Locke enthusiastically stated.
While Mayor Locke, who seeks re-election, views the project as a crucial long-term economic investment for Surrey, critics, including mayoral candidate Coun. Linda Annis, raise concerns about the escalating costs. Annis anticipates that the project’s final price could soar to nearly double the initial $360 million estimate, emphasizing the importance of fiscal responsibility to alleviate the burden on taxpayers.
Annis pointed out the necessity of prioritizing essential services like swimming lessons for families over potentially extravagant projects like the arena. Despite the debates surrounding the financial aspects, Mayor Locke remains committed to pushing the project forward, emphasizing Surrey’s proactive approach to meeting project deadlines.
Even if she doesn’t secure another term as mayor, Locke assured that the arena project will continue progressing at full speed. The proposed arena is slated to become the new home of the Vancouver Giants hockey team from the Western Hockey League, with team members and local celebrity Michael Bublé showing support for the venture during the demolition event.
