Toronto police have confirmed the identity of a 17-year-old boy who was tragically shot and killed in North York on Monday afternoon.
Responding to reports of a shooting at Jane Street and Finch Avenue West just after 3:30 p.m., officers discovered the victim, a teenage boy, who was rushed to the hospital and later pronounced dead. The victim has been identified as 17-year-old Cashie Auguste from Toronto, according to investigators.
The homicide unit has now taken charge of the case, as the investigation unfolds.
During the examination of the scene, authorities found a skateboard nearby, although it remains unclear whether it belonged to the victim or a bystander who may have fled the area. No description of a suspect has been released by the investigators at this time.
Toronto police Superintendent Jack Gurr expressed deep sorrow while addressing the media at the scene on Monday, labeling it as a “very, very sad day” for the community.
In a plea to the culprit, Gurr urged, “For the person responsible, seek legal counsel and surrender yourself.”
Following the temporary closure on Monday, the eastbound lanes on Finch Avenue West at Elana Drive have since reopened to traffic.
