Montreal-based car-sharing service, Communauto, has issued a warning to its customers regarding a possible data security breach that occurred in early September. The company revealed on Monday that an employee allegedly accessed subscriber files without permission during the night of September 3-4, 2026.
Personal information such as names, dates of birth, addresses, phone numbers, driver’s license details, and emergency contact information may have been compromised. There is a possibility that images or PDFs of driver’s licenses, supporting documents, and identity verification photos were also accessed.
Approximately 2% of users are believed to have been impacted by this incident, according to Communauto. The company took immediate action by blocking the employee’s access, contacting law enforcement, and fortifying its security measures. An investigation involving the employee and their equipment was promptly conducted.
Communauto assures customers that payment information and account passwords were not exposed as part of the breach, as the unauthorized access did not extend to that data. The company advises users to stay vigilant against potential phishing scams and other fraudulent activities seeking to obtain additional personal information.
