A man from Calgary has been arrested and is facing charges for allegedly making death threats against Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) received a tip on July 28 regarding threats that were posted through a YouTube account.
The suspect, identified as Jamie Dacosta, 31 years old and residing in Calgary, has been arrested and charged with uttering threats to cause harm to Prime Minister Mark Carney, according to Section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.
The investigation was conducted by the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) of the RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region.
The RCMP Federal Policing unit is responsible for investigating various criminal activities, including threats against internationally protected individuals, terrorism, espionage, and cyber attacks.
In a recent press release, it was emphasized that the security landscape for public figures is constantly changing, both nationally and internationally, and there is a need for heightened awareness.
Dacosta is currently in custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Calgary on September 15.
