Durham police have apprehended a man in connection with disturbing behavior at a park in Port Perry. Reports indicate the individual was seen brandishing a bat, making threats, and hurling racial slurs at park-goers in Palmer Park on Aug. 30.
When law enforcement officers arrived on the scene, the suspect had already fled. However, through video evidence, authorities were able to identify the man engaged in the threatening and discriminatory behavior.
The accused, Luca Downey, 38, from Scugog, has been arrested and is now facing multiple charges, including inciting hatred, assault with a weapon, making threats, and possessing a dangerous weapon.
Downey has been detained for a bail hearing as the investigation continues. Police believe there may be additional individuals who were targeted by the suspect and urge anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist in the case.
