September Storm Havoc Lingers: Toronto Residents Battle Unresolved Damages

Nearly two weeks have passed since a powerful storm wreaked havoc in parts of the Greater Toronto Area, leaving many residents grappling with insurance claims and repair processes as local businesses cope with surging demand.

East York resident John McCorkell is one of the many individuals still navigating the aftermath of the storm. A large tree fell on his vehicle, leading to a complex and frustrating process with his insurance company for a write-off.

While initially, the claims process seemed straightforward, McCorkell faced challenges obtaining compensation for a replacement vehicle due to missing documentation from his bank regarding a small outstanding amount on the car. Additionally, the insurance company stopped providing temporary rental car access, adding to his frustrations.

The storm, which struck on Sept. 2, brought high winds, heavy rain exceeding 100 millimeters in some areas, basement flooding, and hail in certain regions. Toronto fire officials responded to nearly 1,500 calls in a 24-hour period, marking one of the busiest days since the 2013 ice storm.

The aftermath of the storm has spurred a surge in business for local restoration companies and automotive repair shops. At Carstar Toronto Eastern, manager Raj Singh showcased a vehicle impaled by a tree branch, emphasizing the significant damage caused.

Excellence Auto Collision in Scarborough has been inundated with cars damaged by hail, prompting the use of high-tech vehicle scanning equipment and specialists from Calgary to assess the extent of the damage. Drivers like Tomel Sidi have been seeking repairs, highlighting the impact of the storm on their vehicles.

Insurance Bureau of Canada has activated its consumer information center to aid individuals navigating insurance claims post-storm. Anne Marie Thomas, the organization’s consumer and industry relations director, emphasized the importance of documenting damages and staying engaged with insurance companies during the claims process.
