Manitoba Embraces Eternal Daylight Time After Public Vote

Residents of Manitoba will no longer have to deal with changing their clocks as the province has made a decision to stick with daylight time throughout the year. Following a survey that saw 58% of 72,000 residents in favor of central daylight time, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew announced the change, putting an end to the biannual clock adjustments.

Kinew highlighted the feedback from Manitobans, emphasizing their desire to eliminate the inconvenience of changing clocks every spring and fall. With this decision, households can look forward to a more consistent timekeeping routine, starting this November with no clock changes required.

By maintaining daylight time year-round, Manitoba will enjoy brighter evenings during winter, although the mornings may start darker. Kinew initially leaned towards adopting central standard time for its potential health benefits related to increased morning light.

The move towards permanent daylight time aligns Manitoba with Alberta and British Columbia, both of which have also opted for this timekeeping method. While Manitoba’s decision sets it apart from other Prairie provinces that adhere to standard time, it is expected to bring about positive implications for businesses across the region.

Loren Remillard, CEO of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the advantages of extended daylight in the evenings, pointing out the increased opportunities it presents for various sectors like restaurants, retailers, and farmers.
