Quebec to Distribute 440,000 Vaccine Baits by Plane to Combat Rabies Spread
Quebec authorities are gearing up to combat the spread of rabies by distributing nearly half a million vaccine baits via aerial operation in the Eastern Townships, Montérégie, and Centre-du-Québec regions. The strategic initiative, scheduled from Sept. 19 to 23, aims to protect wildlife and reduce the transmission of raccoon rabies in the province.
The Ministry of the Environment plans to deploy approximately 440,000 vaccine baits from low-flying aircraft, covering a vast area of nearly 3,200 square kilometers across 62 municipalities. These efforts target raccoons, skunks, and foxes to prevent the transmission of rabies, a deadly disease that poses a risk to both animals and humans.
The vaccine baits, designed to attract the specific wildlife species, resemble greenish ketchup packets or khaki-green ravioli and emit a sweet odor. Residents are advised not to handle or disturb these baits if encountered.
