On September 21, 2025, a tragic incident unfolded as 15-year-old Nooran Rezayi was fatally shot by a Longueuil police officer on Montreal’s South Shore.
Mohamed Noredine Mimoun, who oversees the Forum Jeunesse de Saint Michel and works with youth, emphasized the perceived injustice surrounding Nooran’s untimely death, echoing the sentiments of the affected family and community.
As the anniversary of this heartbreaking event approaches, a commemorative vigil is scheduled to take place in front of a Longueuil police station on Monday at 6 p.m. This gathering aims to honor Nooran’s memory and shed light on the circumstances leading to his passing, featuring the presentation of a letter directed towards government officials and candidates in the ongoing Quebec election.
Mimoun highlighted the letter’s inquiry into the strained relationship between law enforcement and the community, underscoring the ongoing challenges with transparency in such cases.
Prior to the fatal shooting, Longueuil police had responded to a distress call reporting masked and armed individuals in a Saint-Hubert residential area.
The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI), Quebec’s police oversight body, has completed its investigation into the incident and handed its findings to the Crown prosecutor’s office for a decision on potential charges.
Concerns were raised by Mimoun regarding the timeline of the investigation, suggesting a potential avoidance of addressing the issue amid the election campaign.
Amid these developments, Quebec’s Minister of Internal Security initiated an administrative review of the police operation leading to Nooran’s death. Meanwhile, Rezayi’s family has initiated a $2.2 million lawsuit against the Longueuil police and the city, alleging the use of excessive force and demanding accountability for the officers involved.
The family’s request to disclose the names of the officers responsible faces opposition from the city of Longueuil, further fueling the calls for transparency and justice in this tragic incident.
