The Burnaby Hospital expansion project, previously halted due to budget constraints, is now being revived by the provincial government.
Infrastructure Minister Bowinn Ma has confirmed that the redevelopment is back on track, with a new plan to proceed in three stages instead of one large project as initially intended. Among the nine capital projects that faced delays, the Burnaby Hospital expansion is now being prioritized.
Ma has allocated $210 million towards an immediate upgrade of the hospital’s emergency department and surgical unit. This will be followed by a phased expansion of cancer care services and the introduction of new acute care services.
Initially misconstrued as a cancellation, the government clarified that the project was never intended to be scrapped entirely. Despite causing anxiety among Burnaby residents, Ma assures that the project is moving forward with the collaboration of various ministries and health officials.
While there is speculation about a potential early election, Ma has not provided a direct response to inquiries regarding this matter.
