York Regional Police have successfully dismantled a sophisticated drug-trafficking operation on the Dark Web, resulting in the arrest of five individuals and the seizure of approximately $3 million worth of illegal drugs, a carbine assault rifle, cryptocurrency, cash, and over $1 million in proceeds of crime. This operation, dubbed Project Ghostwire, was a collaborative effort between YRP’s Guns, Gangs and Drug Enforcement Unit and Cybercrime Unit, with assistance from the Criminal Intelligence Service Ontario. The investigation focused on a prominent Dark Web vendor offering a variety of controlled substances, from street-level quantities to bulk orders of up to one kilogram, including cocaine, fentanyl, heroin, and methamphetamine.
The vendor conducted transactions using cryptocurrency and communicated with buyers through encrypted messaging on the Dark Web, utilizing legitimate mail-delivery services to distribute the drugs. Through their investigation, officers were able to identify key members of the distribution network and locate multiple addresses associated with the illegal operation.
