Approximately 50 blue-collar workers have gone on strike as talks for a new collective agreement hit a standstill, shared by union spokesperson Félix Gagnon from the Canadian Union of Public Employees.
These workers have been operating without a contract since December 31, 2024. Gagnon revealed that discussions have hit a roadblock mainly due to wage disputes, with the union contending that the employer’s proposed pay increments are not in line with inflation rates.
Moreover, the employer has suggested reductions in other perks to fund the wage hikes. The union reports that the workers have unanimously authorized a strike, with the potential for an indefinite general strike if a consensus isn’t reached.
At present, Gagnon expressed that the union is urging the employer to show more flexibility during negotiations.
