Belleville authorities are set to provide an update on Thursday regarding the recent shooting incident outside a synagogue that resulted in a police officer being seriously wounded and the shooter losing his life.
Police Chief Murray Rodd is scheduled to speak to the press at 2 p.m.
The violent episode took place on Sunday during a Yom Kippur service at the Sons of Jacob synagogue, a significant day in the Jewish faith. An individual armed with a shotgun targeted a police officer stationed outside, leading to an intense exchange of gunfire.
Constable Jeff Smith sustained critical injuries during the confrontation, while the assailant, identified as Sean Ward, a former Canadian soldier, also suffered life-threatening wounds. Unfortunately, the shooter passed away in the hospital, whereas Const. Smith is now in stable condition.
