A young man, 24, hailing from Quebec City, has been accused of planning an attack linked to the Islamic State group.
According to authorities, the man engaged in online communication with members of the terrorist organization, gathering information to create a chemical weapon that could potentially harm Canadians.
The Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET), led by the RCMP to combat national security threats, took charge of the investigation.
Louay Angoud faces a series of terrorism-related charges, including involvement with a terrorist group.
Scheduled to make an appearance at the Montreal courthouse on Thursday, Angoud’s allegations have yet to undergo legal scrutiny.
The charges leveled against him could result in severe penalties, ranging from a decade-long prison sentence to life imprisonment.
“The Government of Canada places a high priority on preventing radicalization leading to violence. The RCMP is steadfast in its mission to combat extremism motivated by religion,” stated the RCMP’s Federal Policing Eastern Region in a press release.
