The emails, signed by a mysterious “Citizen Vigilante,” contain violent threats against Muslims, leading to heightened security measures and police involvement.
Nabil Sultan, a spokesperson for the organization, revealed that the disturbing emails were sent to schools in Ontario, British Columbia, and Quebec within a 24-hour timeframe. Expressing his shock and concern, Sultan disclosed that his own child attends one of the impacted schools, prompting the deployment of paid security to ensure the safety of students.
While the Muslim Association of Canada has unfortunately dealt with threatening and Islamophobic communications in the past, this direct targeting of its schools marks a distressing escalation. Authorities in the Peel region of Ontario have acknowledged the hate-filled content of the emails, initiating increased police presence near Muslim institutions as a precaution.
Sultan emphasized that these threats come at a time when Islamophobia is on the rise in Canada, citing recent tragic incidents such as the 2021 London, Ont., attack on the Afzaal family and the 2017 Quebec City mosque shooting. The statistics from Statistics Canada further highlight a significant increase in reported hate crimes against Muslims, underscoring the urgency of addressing underlying prejudices.
