In a recent report by the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO), it was declared that two Vancouver Police Department (VPD) officers involved in a carjacking suspect shooting incident from November 2024 will not be charged with any criminal offenses.
The event unfolded in the early hours of Nov. 30, 2024, when a stolen BMW was reported to have been taken at knifepoint on Main Street, as detailed in the IIO report.
Following the car’s high-speed chase through various parts of the city, the officers ultimately intercepted the vehicle on a residential street. Approaching the stolen BMW on foot, the plain-clothed officers discharged their duty firearms, resulting in the suspect sustaining a gunshot wound to his upper right arm. Despite subsequent investigations revealing a bullet fragment from the officer’s pistol in the suspect’s wound and no weapon in the BMW, the IIO concluded that the officers’ actions did not constitute criminal behavior.
While the IIO acknowledged several errors on the part of the officers during the incident, such as disobeying orders, approaching the vehicle on foot without coordination, and one officer inappropriately using his pistol to break a window, it was determined that these actions did not warrant criminal charges.
