In the ongoing Project South investigation, a Toronto police officer, Constable Elias Mouawad, has admitted guilt to unauthorized computer use. Mouawad, among the eight officers involved in the corruption case, entered his plea on Monday. The prosecution is requesting a four-month conditional sentence along with a year of probation. This development follows Derek McCormick’s previous guilty plea in June for theft and breach of trust.
Project South, initiated in June 2025 by the York Regional Police, thwarted an alleged assassination plot targeting a corrections management member in an Ontario facility. During the seven-month probe, it was discovered that officers had illicitly accessed data, which was then shared with criminals involved in violent crimes, including shootings.
In addition to the police officers, nineteen suspects from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), distinct from law enforcement, are also embroiled in a series of charges related to conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, and various drug trafficking infractions.
