Durham police officers are on the lookout for a 23-year-old man from Ajax following a wild incident that involved a Tesla SUV striking two officers during an investigation that originated from a routine traffic stop. The ordeal began in the early hours of September 22 in Oshawa, when officers noticed a speeding Acura sedan without its lights on.
Despite their attempts to pull over the vehicle, the driver evaded the officers and abandoned the car in a residential driveway. After a brief search, the driver was found hiding in a backyard and was apprehended. A search of the Acura revealed a replica firearm and drugs, and it was discovered that the suspect was in violation of court-ordered restrictions.
As the investigation proceeded, a Tesla SUV suddenly arrived at the scene and hit two officers after a brief interaction, before fleeing. One officer sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while the other had minor injuries.
The driver of the Tesla, identified as Yaseen Waggan, 23, of Ajax, is currently wanted on multiple charges including fleeing from the police, reckless operation of a vehicle, assault causing bodily harm, and various counts of non-compliance with court orders.
