Residents in Greater Montreal, Quebec City, and Sherbrooke are in for a special treat as they head to the polls next Monday. Thanks to a new initiative by Elections Quebec, voters will have the opportunity to utilize the Bixi and àVélo bike-sharing services for free on October 5. This move aims to provide citizens with an additional transportation option while encouraging participation in the democratic process.
If you opt for Bixi, you can enjoy a complimentary ride on a regular bike for up to 25 minutes or on an e-bike for 15 minutes between 8 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. Bixi, known for its presence on the Island of Montreal, in Laval, on the north and south shores, as well as in Sherbrooke, has garnered recognition, being honored in TIME magazine’s “Best Inventions Hall of Fame” for the 21st century.
In Quebec City, cyclists utilizing the àVélo service will be granted a free “Elections Quebec Day” pass, valid from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., allowing unlimited trips lasting up to 45 minutes. This collaboration between Elections Quebec, Bixi, and àVélo underscores the importance of utilizing efficient and accessible networks to promote civic engagement.
As election day approaches, polling stations are scheduled to be operational from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., providing ample time for voters to cast their ballots.
