Two men from Hamilton have been charged with a series of offenses following a violent carjacking incident that left a 62-year-old woman injured in broad daylight before police managed to recover her stolen vehicle.
The incident took place at a shopping plaza on 86 Mall Rd. around 8:38 a.m. on Monday when the victim was approached by two men as she was unloading items from her car.
One of the suspects allegedly grabbed the woman’s purse and demanded her car keys, leading to a confrontation where the victim was put in a headlock and thrown to the ground. The suspects then fled with both her purse and car, leaving the woman with minor injuries that required hospital treatment.
Thanks to GPS tracking technology in the stolen vehicle, the police were able to monitor its movements and locate it at a gas station on King Street just 15 minutes after the carjacking. When officers attempted to apprehend the suspects, the driver sped off, hitting a police cruiser in the process. However, the passenger was caught after a short foot chase.
The stolen vehicle was later found abandoned in the Belmont Avenue area, where the second suspect was apprehended.
Abdulrahman Ali, 21, and Hussain Yahya Jawad, 23, both from Hamilton, are facing charges including robbery, motor vehicle theft with violence, possession of stolen property, and other related offenses. They are currently in custody awaiting bail hearings.
