Political Parties Pitch Energy Plans in BC Election Campaign
The race for the provincial election is heating up as parties across British Columbia held campaign events on Monday in various regions. The focus of the campaign shifted towards energy strategy, with both the BC Conservatives and BC NDP presenting their visions for positioning the province as a global energy powerhouse.
Lorne Doerkson, the interim leader of the Conservatives, unveiled the B.C. Energy Superpower Plan, outlining a strategy to boost LNG production in the province by threefold by 2035. Emphasizing the province’s abundant natural gas resources, Doerkson expressed confidence in the transformative impact such a plan could have on British Columbians.
Contrastingly, the NDP criticized the Conservatives’ plan, arguing that current projections already indicate a significant increase in LNG production by 2035. BC NDP leader David Eby highlighted efforts to diversify trading partners and expand key infrastructure like Prince Rupert’s port to bolster the mining sector.
In a different approach, BC Greens leader Emily Lowan campaigned on Vancouver Island, advocating for universal childcare to address the cost-of-living crisis. Lowan proposed immediate steps towards affordable childcare, with a long-term goal of making it free within five years, asserting economic benefits and support for families.
