Marking the National Truth and Reconciliation Day, the march is set to coincide with the final judgment by the Permanent Peoples’ Tribunal after public hearings in May. The event aims to draw attention to the ongoing impact of the residential school system on Indigenous communities.
A panel of judges has accused Canada of perpetuating genocide against Indigenous peoples through policies like the residential school system. The physical and spiritual atrocities inflicted on children and young women in these institutions highlight a history of genocidal colonialism that prioritized seizing Indigenous lands and resources.
The march will kick off at Westmount Park at 1 p.m. and culminate at Cabot Square. Attendees can expect to hear from a lineup of speakers and performers, including Ellen Gabriel, Kevin Deer, The Manitou Singers, and more.
