A truck driver who admitted to causing a fatal accident that resulted in the deaths of a mother and her son in Brossard, near Montreal, is set to be sentenced on Wednesday.
The prosecution and defense came together to recommend a prison term to the judge at the Longueuil courthouse earlier this month. If the judge approves the suggestion, Baljeet Singh, aged 29, may face a six-year prison sentence and a 10-year driving ban.
The tragic incident occurred on the evening of July 22, 2022, on Highway 30 near Brossard, leading to the untimely deaths of Nancy Lefrançois, 42, and her 11-year-old son, Loïc. Additionally, ten other individuals sustained injuries in the collision involving seven vehicles. The truck failed to slow down near a construction zone and collided with the vehicles. Singh is believed to have been distracted by his cellphone, engaged in playing an online game at the time.
Following the accident, Singh fled to the United States but was eventually apprehended in California. After being extradited back to Canada, he pleaded guilty in April.
Family members of the victims attended a court session on September 10 to deliver victim impact statements.
