The Toronto Blue Jays are taking a hard look at their performance following a challenging season. General manager Ross Atkins emphasized the need for a comprehensive evaluation of the team’s shortcomings, stating that every aspect will be closely scrutinized moving forward.
During a recent media session at Rogers Centre, Atkins expressed the team’s commitment to addressing deficiencies across the board. Meanwhile, team president Mark Shapiro was set to provide further insights in a separate media briefing later in the day.
After a strong showing in the previous season that saw them reach the World Series, the Blue Jays faced significant struggles this year, culminating in a disappointing last-place finish in the American League East Division with a record of 79-83.
Despite ending the season on a positive note with a 5-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds, the team grappled with underperformance and injuries, leading to their decline in the standings. Changes in team dynamics, including key departures such as Bo Bichette, Chris Bassitt, and Don Mattingly, also impacted their performance.
While the Blue Jays showed glimpses of resurgence following the trade deadline, a series of setbacks ultimately dashed their hopes of a playoff berth. The inconsistent performance of star player Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and injuries to key pitchers further compounded the team’s challenges.
Although there were bright spots in the form of standout performances by players like Dylan Cease, Spencer Miles, Brett Bateman, Louis Varland, and Kazuma Okamoto, Toronto faced an uphill battle throughout the season. The team’s offensive output notably declined compared to the previous year, highlighting the need for improvements in multiple areas.
