Toronto is gearing up for its biggest municipal election on Oct. 26, offering citizens the chance to choose their next mayor, City Council representatives, and influence the city’s spending priorities.
To participate in Toronto’s municipal elections, you must be a Canadian citizen aged 18 or above, residing in the city, and not legally barred from voting. Additionally, property owners or renters in Toronto, even if not residents, have the right to vote.
Students studying in Toronto yet living in a different Ontario municipality can vote in both locations. It’s crucial to vote in the ward where you live, not where your school is situated.
For Toronto residents studying outside the city, the possibility of voting in both places exists. A consultation with the City Clerk of the educational institution municipality is advised to verify eligibility.
Before heading to the polls, ensure you are registered, know your ward, required identification, and voting details.
Registration on the voters list streamlines the process. If you registered before Sept. 20, your Voter Information Card (VIC) will be sent to you via mail.
If you didn’t receive the VIC, you can update your details, access the VIC, and verify your status using the City of Toronto’s MyVote platform.
The deadline for voter list modifications is 7 p.m. on Oct. 11. Post this, changes can be made at the polling station during advance polls or on election day.
Remember, not being on the voters list doesn’t preclude you from voting, provided you meet the eligibility criteria specified.
