Two individuals, a man and a woman, have been arrested and accused in relation to an alleged assault that took place outside a bar in St. Catharines. The Niagara Regional Police are currently investigating the incident as a possible hate crime.
The assault occurred in the vicinity of St. Paul and Bond streets at approximately 8:50 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, prompting a response from law enforcement due to reports of the attack. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered a 25-year-old man from Welland who had sustained severe injuries and needed medical attention.
Authorities are examining whether the assault had a bias-driven motive. The Niagara Regional Police emphasized that they are actively looking into the possibility of this being a hate crime.
In a released statement, it was mentioned that the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Unit has been notified about the incident and will be providing support to the victim. If it is determined that hate played a role in the incident, it could be a significant factor considered during sentencing.
Expressing his dismay at the violent assault, St. Catharines Mayor, Mat Siscoe, strongly condemned the attack. He stressed that violence, especially when based on sexual orientation, is intolerable and must be denounced unequivocally. The Mayor emphasized the importance of creating a community where everyone feels safe to be themselves without fear of discrimination.
Two suspects have been taken into custody in connection to the case. William Rider, 36, is facing charges of aggravated assault, while 41-year-old Samantha Jacobs has been charged with assault causing bodily harm.
