Community Mourns: Memorial Expands for Two First Nations Elders Tragically Slain at Tsawwassen Mills Mall

A growing memorial honors two Tsawwassen First Nations elders tragically killed during the Truth and Reconciliation walk at Tsawwassen Mills Mall. The Delta Police Department (DPD) is actively investigating the incident, which occurred when a truck struck four pedestrians around 10:25 a.m. on Wednesday.

Preliminary findings indicate that the driver of the truck suffered a medical emergency, leading to the collision with the pedestrians. The identities of the deceased individuals have not been released as authorities collaborate with the BC Coroners Service to provide support to the affected families.

Following the crash, the truck driver received immediate medical attention at the scene and was later discharged from the hospital. The DPD has confirmed that the driver was interviewed and no charges have been filed at this time. Law enforcement emphasizes that there is no evidence indicating the incident was intentional, and they are focused on understanding the medical emergency that the driver experienced.

Notably, the collision was not linked to the nearby Truth and Reconciliation walk but occurred in an area where a House Post unveiling was scheduled. Staff Sgt. Mike Whiteley of the DPD expressed sympathy for the community impacted by the tragedy, emphasizing the thoroughness of the ongoing investigation.

Investigators are seeking additional information from witnesses, including anyone with dashcam or cellphone footage of the incident. Those with relevant details are urged to contact the DPD at 604-946-4444, referencing file 26-18401.
