Victoria transit workers are considering reinstating an overtime ban if an agreement is not reached soon. The union, Unifor Local 333-BC, has set a deadline of October 5 for a fair deal with the government. According to Unifor National President Lana Payne, transit workers have been patient but are looking for a resolution. She emphasized the importance of public investment in ensuring a reliable transit service.
Although recent mediation sessions have addressed some concerns, the union believes there are still significant issues to overcome before a final agreement can be reached. Unifor Western Regional Director Gavin McGarrigle stressed the need for a well-funded and adequately staffed transit system for the benefit of riders, employees, and the community as a whole.
BC Transit has requested Local 333-BC to hold off on the overtime ban until October 5 to allow for further negotiation. The initial ban, which started on September 1, has been a point of contention, with the union highlighting the essential role their members play in keeping Victoria’s transit system operational.
