Concerns Arise Over Staffing Cuts Impacting Students at Toronto Alternative School
Parents at The Grove Community School in Toronto’s west end are voicing worries about recent staffing cuts that are directly affecting students. The Toronto District School Board made changes to the alternative school’s staffing, resulting in the removal of one teacher. This has led to students in Grades 4, 5, and 6 being combined into one classroom, totaling 27 students aged between eight and 11.
Parents express concern over the diverse educational and behavioral needs of the students now grouped together, including four Indigenous students. The shift has resulted in larger class sizes, diminishing the individual attention students once received.
Adam Marchese, a parent, shares his apprehension, stating, “I am extremely worried for my son’s education because he went from a class with 8 to 11 students where he could get individual attention when he had math problems.” Students like Axel Singh, a Grade 6 student, also feel the impact, noting the challenges in receiving necessary assistance from teachers in the current setup.
Moreover, parents question the decision to reduce staffing, especially considering the existing waitlist of families eager to enroll at the school. Concerns are raised regarding the impact on Indigenous students and the school’s commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action.
Parent Archer Pechawis highlights the discrepancy, mentioning, “The Toronto District School Board has committed to the calls to action from the TRC. This is a direct violation of at least the spirit of those calls to action.” The concerns grow as parents stress the difficulties faced by teachers in managing larger, multi-grade classrooms with limited resources.
Amidst the parental outcry, the TDSB has informed families that the decision is final and will not be reconsidered due to the potential system-wide implications of making exceptions for individual schools.
Despite the board’s stance, parents remain steadfast in their efforts to push for a reversal of the decision and seek resolution to the issues affecting their children and the school community.
