The University of Toronto has unveiled an innovative $100 million scholarship initiative aimed at attracting top-tier PhD candidates to Canada. Known as the Presidents’ Impact Scholarship Program, this groundbreaking effort will offer $80,000 in annual funding to 50 scholars over a span of four years, totaling an impressive $320,000 in support.
Described as the largest program of its kind in Canada, the University highlights that it is on par with renowned scholarship offerings at leading research institutions in the United States and the United Kingdom. This endeavor has been made possible through the generous contribution of a Canadian family foundation, which provided a substantial $50 million endowed gift. Additionally, the university itself matched this amount to establish the monumental $100 million fund.
Commencing in September 2027, a group of 12 to 13 exceptional scholars will be selected each year to receive full financial backing for four consecutive years. By the program’s fourth year, it is anticipated to have a cohort of 50 scholars, a number that will be sustained indefinitely.
