Laval Mayor Steps Down for Urgent Brain Tumor Surgery

Mayor of Laval Taking Leave for Brain Tumor Surgery, Deputy Mayor to Step In
The City of Laval recently announced that Mayor Stéphane Boyer will be going on a temporary leave of absence for at least two months to undergo surgery to remove a golf-ball-sized tumor from his brain.

During Boyer’s absence, Ray Khalil, the vice-chair of the Executive Committee, will assume the responsibilities of the mayor.

Ray Khalil, who will be serving as the deputy mayor during this time, expressed his commitment to ensuring the smooth operation of the municipality and the continued delivery of services to Laval residents. He extended well wishes for a speedy recovery to Mayor Stéphane Boyer.

In a social media post, Mayor Boyer shared that while the surgery carries risks such as potential loss of eyesight, paralysis, or hemorrhaging, he remains optimistic about the outcome and the chances of a successful recovery post-operation.

Despite Boyer’s absence, the Municipal Council, Executive Committee, and city administration will continue their functions as usual in line with their designated roles and responsibilities.

At 38 years old, Boyer became Laval’s youngest mayor in 2021. He has been managing his duties while also coping with ankylosing spondylitis, a condition causing spinal inflammation, stiffness, and pain.
