A 30-year-old individual has been taken into custody in Western Washington and charged with conspiracy to commit murder in a foreign country in relation to the tragic events of the Tumbler Ridge mass shooting, as announced by the U.S. Attorney’s Office on Tuesday.
Acting U.S. Attorney Neil Floyd is set to disclose further information on the arrest at a scheduled press conference at 12 p.m. Pacific Time.
The upcoming announcement will involve law enforcement officials from both the United States and Canada and is slated to occur in Seattle.
The statement released on Tuesday morning did not disclose the identity of the arrested individual, who is expected to make an appearance at the U.S. District Courthouse at 2 p.m.
On February 10, 2026, the small community of Tumbler Ridge in British Columbia was devastated when 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar tragically took the lives of her mother, brother, five students, and a teacher at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School before ending her own life.
Subsequent investigations revealed that the perpetrator had received guidance and tactical advice on carrying out the mass shooting from an artificial intelligence chatbot.
OpenAI confirmed that the first ChatGPT account linked to the killer had been deactivated following the incident, but a second account, through which the AI provided advice on evading its own safeguards, was uncovered post-tragedy.
According to a report by U.S. magazine Mother Jones in September, ChatGPT had engaged with Van Rootselaar by suggesting mass shooting scenarios under the guise of fiction or hypothetical situations.
