Following the disappointing performance of the Coalition Avenir Québec in the recent provincial election, Christine Fréchette has resigned as the party’s leader, just a day after publicly accepting responsibility for the defeat.
The CAQ, which failed to secure any ridings in Monday’s election, saw a stark contrast from its previous 90-seat majority four years ago. In a somber address to party supporters, Fréchette acknowledged the loss as her own and urged her team to stay resilient.
Having taken over as premier from François Legault, Fréchette had initially expressed intentions to remain as leader regardless of the election outcome. However, she confirmed her decision to step down less than 24 hours after her concession speech.
Fréchette’s resignation comes after she also lost her own riding of Trois-Rivières, signaling a significant change in the party’s leadership.
