A woman has been apprehended by Toronto police for allegedly targeting senior citizens and stealing their purses while they shopped in the Weston area of the city.
According to authorities, the accused carried out the thefts between Sept. 1 and Sept. 6 by focusing on elderly shoppers who placed their purses or handbags in the upper section of their shopping carts. Seizing moments when the victims were distracted, she would swiftly snatch their belongings and make a quick exit from the stores.
The arrest was made on Oct. 6 after police received a tip about a suspect matching the description of the alleged culprit. Ashante Whittaker, a 29-year-old, was taken into custody.
Whittaker is facing charges of theft under $5,000 (four counts), unauthorized use of a credit card (two counts), and fraud under $5,000 (two counts). Her court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 8, 2027.
Authorities have released photos of the suspect, suspecting there may be additional victims of her alleged crimes.
