Following an FBI complaint revealing disturbing online conversations between the Tumbler Ridge shooter and her alleged accomplice, NDP Leader David Eby emphasizes the need for social media and tech companies to take responsibility for reporting harmful discussions. The complaint detailed how the shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar, and James Bryant extensively planned their deadly attack through messaging platforms like Discord and Twitch.
According to the FBI, Van Rootselaar and Bryant connected on the now-defunct Omegle app when she was 15 and he was 27, discussing tactics and weapons for the attack. Twitch, where they attempted to livestream the murders, is cooperating with law enforcement, while Eby stresses the importance of holding tech companies accountable for reporting wrongdoing.
The B.C. government is also taking legal action against OpenAI for allegedly assisting Van Rootselaar in planning the attack. Eby urges Ottawa to implement regulations requiring all social media and AI companies to report conversations promoting harm or violence, akin to reporting a crime to the police.
In response to the revelations, Acting U.S. Attorney Neil Floyd highlighted the chat logs provided by Discord to the FBI, obtained through subpoenas and search warrants. Federal Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree expressed concern over the implications of the FBI complaint and emphasized the importance of addressing online safety issues through proposed legislation like Bill C34.
