Surrey Residents Head to the Polls Early to Choose New Leaders
Residents in Surrey are already casting their votes early as they gear up to select individuals to fill key roles in city hall and the school board. The upcoming election will decide the mayor, eight city councillors, and six school trustees.
At the Fleetwood Community Centre advance polling station, locals expressed their hopes for the future of Surrey, highlighting concerns such as safety issues related to the ongoing extortion crisis, traffic problems, and property taxes.
The mayoral race in Surrey is heating up with seven candidates vying for the position. Among the prominent contenders are the incumbent Mayor Brenda Locke, former mayor Doug McCallum, and two-term city councillor Linda Annis. Each candidate is making significant promises on crucial topics like public safety, taxes, transportation, and city infrastructure.
Mayor Locke’s re-election campaign includes a comprehensive $1.4 billion investment plan focusing on key areas such as recreation, culture, community facilities, public safety, and emergency services. On the other hand, McCallum vows to extend the SkyTrain to Newton, freeze property tax hikes for four years, and adopt a strict approach toward criminal activities. Annis pledges to boost the police force by 300 officers over four years and establish a police training center to expedite recruitment.
Political analyst Hamish Telford suggests that with multiple candidates sharing similar priorities, voters face the challenge of differentiating between them, potentially leading to a split vote.
Surrey’s chief election officer, Gib van Ert, notes the city’s growth and increased demand for early voting. As a result, the number of advance polling locations has been expanded from six in the previous election to 10 this time around.
Residents in Surrey have more opportunities for advance voting on Oct. 10, 14, and 15 at various locations across the city. For additional information and voting site details, residents can visit the City of Surrey’s website.
