Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) in Canada is breaking new ground by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into the hiring and training processes for 911 dispatchers. While concerns about AI remain widespread, HRPS sees it as a valuable asset for finding and preparing the best candidates for these critical roles.
According to Brian Dodd, the manager of Halton police’s 911 communications bureau, AI technology provided by GovWorx is revolutionizing the selection process by sifting through a large pool of applicants to identify the most suitable candidates. With over 1,400 applicants vying for recent positions as 911 communicators, this technology is essential in streamlining recruitment efforts.
Moreover, AI is playing a pivotal role in training these essential personnel by creating immersive simulations of real-life emergency scenarios. By incorporating background noises like fire alarms and explosions, the technology enables trainees to practice and refine their skills in a realistic setting before handling actual emergency calls.
In addition to aiding in recruitment and training, HRPS utilizes another AI system known as SARA AI to handle non-emergency calls efficiently. SARA assists in managing non-critical queries, offering guidance on reporting procedures, transferring calls to other agencies, and sending relevant information via text messages. This system helps keep communication lines clear for emergency calls, ensuring that 911 dispatchers are readily available to respond promptly when urgent situations arise.
